Who We Are & What We Do
The Ottawa Kashmiri Pandit Association (OKPA) is a nonprofit organization committed to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Kashmiri Pandit community while fostering unity and a sense of belonging in Ottawa and beyond. We serve as a platform for cultural exchange, education, and support, helping to maintain our traditions and values.
At OKPA, we organize cultural events, religious ceremonies, and community gatherings to celebrate and promote our heritage. We also focus on educational initiatives, offering resources for the younger generation to learn about Kashmiri culture, language, and history. Through advocacy, outreach, and inclusivity, we aim to raise awareness of our community’s contributions and foster a strong cultural presence.

CULTURE
Kashmiri culture is a blend of influences from different regions, which has given it a unique identity. Values like hospitality, respect for elders, and community spirit are central.

Hospitality (Mehman Nawazi): Known for their warm and welcoming nature, Kashmiris deeply value the tradition of treating guests with the utmost respect and kindness.
Festivals and Traditions: Kashmiri festivals, like Herath (Shivratri) and Navreh, are celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm, symbolizing the unity of family and community.
CRAFT
​Kashmir is globally renowned for its craftsmanship, with artistic traditions passed down through generations.

Pashmina and Embroidery: Kashmiri artisans are known for creating exquisite *Pashmina shawls, **Kashida embroidery, and **Sozni work*, symbolizing patience, dedication, and precision.
Carpet Weaving: The intricate designs in *Kashmiri carpets* reflect a deep appreciation for nature and aesthetics.
SPIRITUALITY
Kashmiris have a strong connection to spirituality, which is expressed through both their religious practices and their inner quest for peace and balance.

RELIGION

Kashmiri Pandit Heritage: The Kashmiri Pandit community has upheld the ancient Hindu traditions of Sanatan Dharma and Shaivism, focusing on self-awareness and the worship of deities like Lord Shiva.
